Born of Night

Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of my favorite authors. OK, to be fair,  I think she tops the list.  This is the first book I read by her.

This is one of my favorite books, I can reread it over and over.

This book is a science fiction, futuristic romance novel.

It is set in the Ichidian Universe.  It is comprised of  many diverse worlds, cultures and beings.

In this universe The League rules all. They are corrupt and ruthless.  Their soldiers are trained assassins.

No one leaves The League.  No one quits The League.

How ruthless are they?  Well, you are promoted to higher ranks by killing and that includes your fellow League assassins.  Nice.

OK so......... yeah, the basic premise of this book is: Save the Princess!!

No shit.

Literally.

A little fairy tale-ish (hot sexy fairytale)

But she's kind of a badass princess, sorta......  Well, no, not Xena the warrior princess badass, but kittens claws hurt too!

The heroine is Kiara Zamir, professional dancer, princess, daughter of a a military leader, about 5'3 very slim.  She's a little bratty, but I love that about her.

Her character got my attention at being as small as she is and taking on two icky kidnappers.  Did she go all Xena and kick their asses????(we talked about that already.) No, but she wasn't afraid to get her hands bloody.

She hates that she's been sheltered, so she pretty much lives her work.  She's famous throughout the universe because she's the best (it's all she does).  She has no social life other than promoting her career, maybe one REAL friend who wouldn't sell her out, and a father who loves her but is busy running an empire.

(I look like a fucking weirdo reading these books because they make me laugh out loud.)

“What the hell was that action?” Syn asked him.
“I think it’s something called ‘paternal concern.’ ”
Syn scowled at his bland explanation. “What . . . ? You sure? I thought that crap was a myth.”
Nykyrian shrugged. “No, really. I watched it once in a documentary. It was fascinating. Believe it or not, there are people out there who actually have feelings for their progeny.”
“Get the fuck out. No way. You’re screwing with my head again, aren’t you?”
“No. I swear. You just saw it with your own eyes. I did not make that shit up.”
Syn shivered. “Yeah but it’s really messing with my concept of the natural order of the universe. Paternal love? What’s next? Limb regrowth? Genetic splicing reversals?”

Insert Hero: Nykyrian Quiakides.  Tall, blonde, handsome, badass.
Command Assassin, best in the League.  Kindness and love are foreign concepts.

"Look at him.  Like some wild animal Trying to tear me apart. I couldn't ask for a better specimen."

How badass is he?  The only assassin to ever leave the League and live more than a few hours. Even they can't kill him.  He built the Sentella and became Nemesis, the most feared entity in the universe

“Do people always act this way around you? (Kiara)
You should have seen the reactions when I wore a League uniform. Those were actually comical. Except for the ones who lost control of their bowels. Then it was just messy. (Nykyrian)”

As a political move, a contract was taken out on Kiara to have her killed.  Kiara's father hires the Sentella to protect her.  After already saving her once as Nemesis, Nykyrian doesn't want to see her dead but he's distracted by her and distraction can lead to death.

There are lots of supporting characters.  They are very well developed and truly hilarious.  Definitely adds to the humor of the book. Syn is one of my favorites (he has his own book too!)

“Not to mention, it’d be worth guarding her just for the eye candy alone – sheez, can you imagine being around  that day in and day out........" He paused to look at Nykyrian.  "Wonder if she sleeps naked…Bet she showers that way. Every day even. Think about it. I’ll even bet she’s naked underneath her clothes.”

For being over 500 pages, it moved very fast.  And of course left me wanting more!

Here's the video for the book series:
